5 Jan. 1776 Erlangen (Germany). Lutheran clergyman at Amersfoort 1745-<br />

1749, and at Leeuwarden till 1756, then Prof. nat. hist., etc. at Erlangen.<br />

He translated Rumphius' "Amboinsche Rariteitkamer" in German. He was the<br />

author of a.o. "Bedenkingen betreffende den dierlijken oorsprong der koraalgewassen"<br />

(from Latin, Dordrecht 1771).<br />

He possessed a cabinet of which many animals are described in Knorr: Deliciae<br />

Naturae, which he translated in <strong>Dutch</strong> (Dordrecht 1771, see A XII, XIII,<br />

XIV, XXI; B IV-VI; C V; D III; F IV-VI; G III-IV; H V-VII; K 1-III, V; L<br />

He possessed a cabinet of stuffed birds, fishes and insects in liquor, birdeggs,<br />

Lepidoptera, shells, a crocodile, the skin of a snake and products<br />

from the sea. The collection was sold 15 april 1782 at 's-Gravenhage (Boekh.<br />

1473. STEL, Adriaan van der - ca. 1665 Haarlem - 13 Oct. 1720 Ambon. Bookkeeper<br />

of the <strong>Dutch</strong> East India Company at the Cape (1679); 11 0nderkooprnan 11<br />

(Merchant) at Bengal (1685-1697); back in Holland, Amsterdam, Keizersgracht<br />

(1697-1703), then "Buitengewone Raad" (Extraordinary Councillor), President<br />

of the "Schepenen" (Aldermen) (1704) and Governor of Ambon from 1705 onwards.<br />

He contributed drawings - partly after specimens of his own cabinet - to<br />

"Po is sons, ecrivisses et crabes de di verses couleurs et figures extraordinaires<br />

que l'on trouve autour des iles Moluques, et sur les cotes des terres<br />

Australes; publie par L. Renard, 2 vols. Amsterdam 1718-1719 (2nd ed., Amsterdam<br />
