727. HOOGERWERF, Andreas - 29 Aug. 1906 Vlaardingen - 5 Febr. 1977 Bakkum.<br />

Ornithologist, mammalogist, taxidermist. In 1931 he became second preparator<br />

at the Zool. Museum of 's Lands Plantentuin, Bogor (Java), till 1935. Afterwards<br />

he became an official of nature protection at 's Lands Plantentuin. In<br />

1963 he returned to Holland.<br />

His extensive collection of birds, particularly of the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies,<br />

and of ca. 4,700 negatives (he was a very able bird photographer) is in the<br />

Medical School (founded 16 Sept. 1825, since ca. 1865 not longer existing),<br />

with lectores in medicine, midwifery, chemistry and botany; laboratory and<br />

herbarium vivus. In 1850 lector van Hoolwerff founded a small botanical<br />

garden on hi.s own expense. Apparently a collection of preparations was<br />

stored i.n a room in the Grote Kerk, this collection was saved during the big<br />

fire in the church on 3 Aug. 1838. After the death of lector G.J. Rijnders<br />

in 1839, his collection of "preparations, machines and hobbies" was bought<br />

by the town and presented to the school, cf. A.D. Wittop Koning 1950, in:<br />

Ned. Tijdschr. Geneesk, XCIV, p. 1287-1290 (Bijdr. Gesch. Geneesk. XXX, p.<br />

22-25).<br />

730. HOORN, Joan van - 16 Nov. 1653 Amsterdam - 21 Febr. 1711 Amsterdam.<br />

Occupied several important government posts in the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies, a.o.<br />

Governor-General 1702-1.710 (1704-1709 ace. to W,P. Encycl.). Het was a fabulous<br />

rich man. He inherited from Joannes Camphuis (q. v.) the island Edam,<br />

which he transferred to the <strong>Dutch</strong> East India Company.<br />
