collection consisting of 107 Dutch birds, of which 89 were stuffed. He now
collects skins.

Physician at Rotterdam for more than 60 years. Director of the Bataafsch Genootschap.
In 1826 he bought a large garden, which he used to breed plants,
Later it became the Hortus Botanicus of the Rotterdam Clinical School (1828-
1866). Dalen was its first Director,
Possessed an extensive cabinet of esp. insects and shells, sold 23 June
1853, Rotterdam. Sale catalogue in "Artis" nr. 13. The Zool. Gardens Amsterdam
(Artis) bought the Coleoptera for Dfl. 2,000.--, cf. Gids voor de bezoekers
Natura Artis Magistra 1869 (in "Artis"); Maitland, in: Ned. Tijdschr.
Dierk. I, p. LIV-·LV; Ms. Cat. ("Artis" nr. 3461). Parts of the shell collection
were also bought by the Amsterdam Zool. Garden, cf. Maitland 1863, p.
LIV (incl. catalogue); the greater part of the shell collection, however,
came in the RMNH, c£. Horst & Schepman 1908, p. VIII. Lepidoptera were
