collection consisting of 107 <strong>Dutch</strong> birds, of which 89 were stuffed. He now<br />

collects skins.<br />

Physician at Rotterdam for more than 60 years. Director of the Bataafsch Genootschap.<br />

In 1826 he bought a large garden, which he used to breed plants,<br />

Later it became the Hortus Botanicus of the Rotterdam Clinical School (1828-<br />

1866). Dalen was its first Director,<br />

Possessed an extensive cabinet of esp. insects and shells, sold 23 June<br />

1853, Rotterdam. Sale catalogue in "Artis" nr. 13. The Zool. Gardens Amsterdam<br />

(Artis) bought the Coleoptera for Dfl. 2,000.--, cf. Gids voor de bezoekers<br />

Natura Artis Magistra 1869 (in "Artis"); Maitland, in: Ned. Tijdschr.<br />

Dierk. I, p. LIV-·LV; Ms. Cat. ("Artis" nr. 3461). Parts of the shell collection<br />
