1341. SCHEEPMAKER, G.Wzn.- born Amsterdam- 2 July 1854. Schoolmaster,<br />

"Instituteur".<br />

He possessed an extensive cabinet of shells, famous among contemporary collectors<br />

for the various rare objects from China, Australia, Madagascar and<br />

N. America. He presented a part of his collection to "Artis" in 1844, see<br />

also: Kort vers lag Wetensch. Werkz. Cie. Bij dr. tot de Dierk. p. 10, 15.<br />

Other parts of his collection came in the possession of J. Voorhoeve (q.v.,<br />

see cat, Boekh. 2255a; auction Voorhoeve 2 April 1872); and of Loebbecke<br />

(cf. Kobelt 1904, in: Nachr. Blatt XXXVI, p. 81-87). His son C. Scheepmaker,<br />

Gzn. presented shells to Zool. Mus. Amsterdam in 1870 and 1873, cf. Jutting<br />

1939, p. 174. Catalogus van een zeer belangrijke boekverzameling over natuurlijke<br />

historie gedeeltelijk nagelaten door G. Scheepmaker Wzn, in leven<br />

Amateur entomologist.<br />

He made microscopical preparations, especially of the honey-bee and the<br />

bean. Nemnich 1809, p. 372, 373 (v. 1808, when Schepens had done this work<br />

during about 40 years). In "Artis" (nr. 3537 A) is a manuscript of a<br />

treatise on the honey-bee; it contains 63 drawings, an elaborate explanation,<br />

and a critical commentary on the work of Swammerdam and Leeuwenhoek.<br />
