78. BARTELS family - Father Max Eduard Gottlieb and 3 sons: Max, Ernst<br />

and Hans. They lived on a plantation in West Java, and were very active in<br />

collecting birds and eggs. Their collections are indispensable for any study<br />

of the birds of Java and Sumatra. Many species were lost during the Japanese<br />

occupation; the remainder of the collections is now in the RMNH. They left<br />

an extensive collection of notes, commentaries, annotations, etc. on birds<br />

of Java and Sumatra.<br />
