Haarlem, Lawyer. In 1815 Member of the Court of Civil Justice at Paramaribo;<br />

1821 judge-advocate; 1828 President of the Court of Justice. In 1830 he returned<br />

to Holland.<br />

He possessed a collection of ca. 250 stuffed birds from Guyana. The collection<br />

was presented to the RMNH, the duplicates to the Univ. of Groningen.<br />

1823 Voorburg. Secretary of Kampen 1.795; Member of the National Meeting<br />

1796-1798; Commissar-general in S,-Africa 1802-1805, later he was Councillor<br />

of State ("Staatsraad") and member of the "Eerste Kamer" (First Chamber).<br />

In 1.803 he sent a box of ores and naturalia to the "Hollandsche Maatschappij"<br />

of which he was one of the Directors. In 1805 he brought with him a<br />

collection of insects, brought together by Dr. M.H.K. Lichtenstein, physician<br />

of Governor general J.W. Janssens, on his travels with Mist. At that<br />

time it was the most complete collection of African insects in Europe.<br />

March 1942 Wassenaar. Educated at Leiden and Utrecht, graduated both in<br />

geology and biology. As a botanist he took part in an expedition to the West<br />

Indies under W.F.R. Suringar and K. Martin. Lecturer (1888-1891), and Prof.<br />

of mineralogy, geology and paleontology (1891-1897) at Amsterdam University;<br />

geologist in the S.-African republic 1897-1905; Prof. at the Technical University<br />

at Delft 1906-1930.<br />

His collection of Macrolepidoptera from Holland came in the possession of<br />

J.Th. Oudemans (q,v.) ca. 1900 (Horn & Kahle 1935-'37), p. 181). Eigen Haard<br />
