He possessed one of the richest collections of fossils from the St. Pietersberg,
brought together between 1757 and 1782. He also possessed a collection
of medical instruments. The collection was auctioned 16 Aug, 1782, His
daughter nearly bought everything. Later on Petrus Camper (q.v.) bought many
specimens from her for himself. Hoffman did not publish anything, but his
drawings came via the heritage of A.G. Camper in the library of the "Maatschappij
