Jan. 1717 Amsterdam. Paintress of insects, esp. caterpillars and butterflies.
After a divorce in 1685 she joined the Labadists at Wiewerd (Prov.
Friesland) and from 1691 onwards lived in Amsterdam, except the period 1699-
1701, when she studied and painted plants and insects in Surinam.
She was particularly interested in the metamorphosis of caterpillars, cf.
her book: Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung und wunderbare Blumennahrung
(Nurnberg 1679, Latin translation 1717, Amsterdam). About the Surinam i.nsects
she published: Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (Amsterdam
1705), also translated in Dutch, German and French. Reprinted in Dutch:
Utrecht, 1976 and Zutphen 1982. Also the wondrous transformation of caterpillars:
50 engravings selected from Erucarum ortus (1718); repr. London
1978. Through her daughter her inheritance came in Leningrad: from this much
has been published, viz.: M.S. Merian 1974: Leningrader Aquarelle, 2 vols.
ed. by E. Ullmann, a facsimile edition of the water-colour drawings bought
by Czar Peter in 1717 after her death. As to her own collection, see p. 34,
42-43, 44, 54, 80, 90, 104. From p. 46 it is clear that she sold animals and
from some of the pictures can be concluded that she supplemented the missing
plates for Rumphius' "Amboinsche Rariteitenkamer" (these Leningrad drawings
proved to be the originals); it is also clear that she copied objects from
