Museum of natural history founded 1927 by F.A. des Tombes (1884-1926) and G.
van Roon (1870-1928), located in a school-house. These collections were
partly destroyed by fire in 1933; a new museum was founded in 1935, thanks
to a legacy of Mr. N.J.A.C.A, Hoffmann. In his honour this museum was called
the "Wethouder Hoffmann" museum of nat. hist. Beautiful collection of mammals
and birds, incl. collection of eggs (a.o. of W. Hellebrekers, q.v.),
bats (coll. Jos Cremers, q.v.), shells (coll. G. van Roon, q.v. ), butterflies
(coll, E. J. Nieuwenhuis, q.v. and A.J. & J.G. Zollner, q.v.), Hymenoptera
(coll. J. Lindemans, q.v.), holes, nests, etc, of various kinds of
The cabinet of the "Erasmiaans Gymnasium" is worth mentioning, cf. A.B. van
Deinse, in: NRC 3 Sept. 1939 (60 years anniversary). The original collection
came from the taxidermist of mammals and birds and assistant of the school,
Barend Strasters (30 March 1825 Leidschendam- after 1909 Rotterdam), son of
a farmer. He also possessed a collection of butterflies. Later on this collection
is greatly enlarged by A.B. van Deinse (q.v.).
In Rotterdam is also a small zoo in "Plaswijckpark" (Hoogenhout 1978a, nr.
