1221. QUAESTIUS, Johannes Wijbrandus - Physician and surgeon at Leeuwarden.<br />

Possessed a cabinet of anatomy, diseased bones, stuffed animals, minerals,<br />

shells and petrified remains from the St. Pietersberg, Groningen and some<br />

other places. His cabinet and his library were sold at Leeuwarden, Apri.l<br />

1828; sale catalogue in 3 parts Leeuwarden 1827, cf. Engelmann 1846, p. 9.<br />

The diseased bones were bought by his brother-in-law P,E.A. Vegelin van<br />

Claerbergen, and offered to the Athenaeum of Franeker (q.v.). AKL 1827, II,<br />

1226. RADERMACHER, Jacobus Cornelis Mattheus - 31 March 1741 's-Gravenhage<br />

- 24 Dec. 1783 in the Indian Ocean murdered by a sailor. Lawyer. In 1757 and<br />

again in 1767 he went to the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies and became a member of the<br />

"Collegie van Schepenen" (College of Aldermen) at Batavia. In 1768 he became<br />

a "Baljuw" (Bailiff), in 1776 "Raad" (Councillor extraordi.narius) of the Indies<br />

and President of the "Collegie van Schepenen" and in 1783 Vice-admiral<br />

of the return fleet. On his journey to Holland he was murdered during a mutiny<br />

of the Chinese crew. He was one of the founders of the Bataviaasch Genootschap<br />

(founded 1778, see: Verhand. Bataviaasch Genootsch. XXV, 1813).<br />

He was also very active in founding a museum of natural history and a hortus<br />

botanicus at Batavia.<br />

1227. RAU (RAVIUS), Johannes Jacobus - 1668 (Raden, Schwabischer Kreis,<br />

Germany) - 18 Sept. 1719 Leiden, Started his career as a ships physician;<br />

since 1694 he lived at Amsterdam, where he gave anatomical demonstrations;<br />

1713 Prof. med. Leiden. Well-known for his operations of the stone.<br />

He bequeathed his anatomical preparations to Leiden Universtiy. This collection<br />

is the oldest one, described in the catalogue of Sandifort (q.v.). Al-
