Abraham (q.v.) and father of Laurentius Theodorus (q.v.). Friend of Linnaeus.<br />

Naturalist, esp. botanist.<br />

Possessed a collection of fishes from the Cape. Author of a.o. Pisces belgii,<br />

in: Acta Upsal. 1744-1750 (with list of fishes and of the <strong>Dutch</strong> waters);<br />

Index suppellectis Lapidae ••• 1750; Flora Virginica, 1739, His books<br />

were sold after his death on 16 March 1763 at Leiden, the catalogue (Boekh.<br />

nr. 298) containing on p. 72 only some naturalia, the greater part of them<br />

Leiden (1773 ace. to Stafleu). Son of Johannes Fredericus (q. v.). Lawyer.<br />

"Raadsheer en Schepen" (Counciller and Alderman) of Leiden, "Depute de la<br />

chambre des Comptes de la Province de Hollande a La Haye". Naturalist.<br />

Author of: Museum Ichthyologicum 1754-1756 ("Artis"); Bibl. Regni Anim. atque<br />

Lapid. 1760 ("Artis"); Zoophilal:ium Gronovianum (1758, 1774, 1781) ("Artis").<br />

Possessed an extensive cabinet of corals, fishes, lower animals, insects,<br />

reptiles, mammals, shells, stones, plants, etc. (Argenville 1780, p. 346,<br />

348). Van Alphen's Catalogue 1789, p. 146, describes a Siren lacerta from<br />

this cabinet. To Gronovius also is due the invention of preparing flat skins<br />

of fishes in a dry state, and preserving them in the manner of an herbarium.<br />

His books (Boekh. nr. 438) were sold 5 Oct, 1778 seq., Leiden, followed 7<br />

Oct. 1778 seq. by the Museum, the index of which (following the Catalogus<br />

librorum) was prepared by Meuschen, forming also part 8 of his Miscellanea<br />

Meuschenii; preface of Boddaert to the posthumous part 3 of Zoophilacium<br />

Gronovianum, 1781; Vosmaer 1790. Museum Gronovianum (L.Th, Gronovius) 7 Oct.<br />

1778 seq. Leiden 1778 in Bibl. Mus. Copenhagen. The collection of dried<br />

fishes in a chest came via France in the British Museum, See Gray: Catalogue<br />

of fish collected and described by L.T. Gronow now in the British Museum.<br />
