552. GOVERTSEN, Jan - ca. 1545 - 10 March 1617 Leiden. Probably he lived
at Haarlem and he was the owner of a famous collection of shells.
Dance 1966, pl. V, p. 34: "Jan Govertsen's shell collection was a source of
artistic inspiration for the Haarlem painter Cornelisz. Cornelis. In 1607 he
painted Govertsen, surrounded by men and women representing the arts and
sciences, seated at a table on which repose several marine shells ••• in his
right hand Govertsen holds up a fine hippopus hippopus L. ". Scheller 1969,
