Protestant clergyman at Alkmaar 1744-1749, Haarlem 1749-1760, Rotterdam<br />

1760-1785. He was one of the founders of the "Hollandsche Maatschappij" at<br />

Haarlem (1752), and of the "Bataafsch Genootschap" at Rotterdam (1771), of<br />

which he became Director. Field ornithologist, author of several books on<br />

natural history and theology.<br />

Nozeman is the author of "Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding,<br />

aart, en eigenschappen beschreeven • • alle naer 1 t leeven geheel nieuw en<br />

naeuwkeurig getekend, in 't koper gebracht en natuurlijk gekoleurd door, en<br />

onder opzicht van Chr. Sepp en Zoon", 5 volumes with 250 color plates gr. in<br />

fol., Amsterdam 1770-1829; repr. 1960, For himself, but also for Princess<br />

Anna, widow of Prince William IV, he collected butterflies and birds. He<br />

himself possessed a large cabinet, esp. birds from N.- and S.- Holland. Sander<br />

University.<br />

Nuck was a very skilful anatomist, his preparations were praised by Boerhaave.<br />

He was very experienced in the technique of injecting preserving material<br />

for anatomical purposes. He also possessed a "domestic amphitheatre".<br />

Some specimens of the Anatomical Cabinet Leiden are attributed to Nuck<br />

(Geyskes & van der Klaauw 1934, p. 192), but according to Elshout (1952, p.<br />

14-15), they are to be attributed to Ed. Sandifort, as they are preserved in<br />

turpentine. The specimens prepared by Nuck are supposed to have gone lost in<br />
