In 1894 he entered the order of the Jesuits. In 1899 he became teacher<br />

at Valkenburg, in 1901 at Sittard; 1916-1941 Prof. phil. at Valkenburg (St.<br />

Ignatius college).<br />

Collected ants and Diptera; specialist on myrmecophyle and termitophyle Diptera,<br />

particularly Phoridae. The collection is very rich in species and<br />

types. It has an unprecedented value for the study of the Phoridae. Schmitz<br />

described ca. 650 new species of Phoridae in 232 publications. In 1934 he<br />

became Keeper of the ant-collection of his friend Erich Wasmann, the "Museum<br />

Wasmannianum". He was the author of "Die Ameisen und ihre Gaste", 1906.<br />

After the discontinuance of the Soc. des Amis Sc, Lettres et Arts, their<br />

collection of fossils from the cretaceous came into the possession of Dr.<br />

Schols (jaw fragments of fishes, hermit-crabs, teeth of a Mosasaurus). 18<br />

March 1927 Jos Crerners (q.v.) succeeded in saving this collection from the<br />

St. Pietersberg and to get it in the Museum of Nat. Hist. at Maastricht.<br />
