1314. RUMPH IUS, George Everhard - Between 15 May and 7 July 1628 Han au
(Germany) - 15 June 1702 Ambon (Indonesia), In 1652 he came in the service
of the Dutch East India Company; 1657 Vice-merchant; 1672 Merchant. Since
1670 he was blind.
He did a systematic research of the flora and fauna of Ambon. His "Amboinsche
Rariteitkamer" has been sent to d'Acquet (q,v.) in 1701. It was published
1705 at Amsterdam, under the direction of Simon Schijnvoet (q.v.). A
new editon appeared 1741. This work was especially important for owners of
cabinets of shells, cf. Ullmann 1974: Maria Sybilla Merian, Leningrader
Aquarelle, I, p. 46, 48-50, 59, 98, 100, 102, 104, 106, 134; I, pl. 13-24;
II, pl. 88-129; this facsimile edition of the paintings bought by Czar Peter
in 1717, proves that she had drawn many original plates from Dutch cabinets
used in the "Amboinsche Rariteitkamer" of Rumphius 1705 and 1741, as had already
been mentioned by Uffenbach; cf. also Rumphius Gedenkboek 1902, p. 11,
167, 199. In "Artis" is a specimen of the "Rariteitkamer" from the possession
of A. Vosmaer that has been, according to a note, coloured by Merian, in
Ms. The "Amboinsche Dierboek" consisted of 3 books: Van Land- Lugt en Zeegedierte.
1be manuscript has been lost, but the contents are probably in the
3rd part of Valentijn's (q.v.) "Oud- en Nieuw Oost-Indil:!, the name of Rumphius
is not mentioned, however. The "Herbarium Amboinense" has been edited
after his death by Joh. Bunnan (1741-1750, in 6 vols.). The !'Is. is in the
Univ. Library, Leiden. Rumphius also wrote "Amboinsche landbeschrijving" and
"Amboinsche historie". These works were also used by Valentijn. Rumphius
corresponded with many learned men, e.g. Herbert de Jager, Willem ten Rhijne,
Joh, Camphuys, Andries Cleyer, etc. 'Ibe sale advertized in the Amsterdamsche
Courant of 26 May 1714, which had to take place 4 June 1714 at Amsterdam,
mentions shells and zoophytes from the coast of Ambon. A collection
of shells and "rarities" of Rumphius has been in the possession of Cosimo
III de Medici, Grand Duke of Tocane; this collection is now i.n the State Museum
at Florence; cf, Le collezioni di G.E.
manuscript catalogue prepared by G. Targioni-Tozzetti in 1763, Greshof 1909:
