1396. SELLIUS, Godfried - 1704(?) Dantzig (now Gdanzk, Poland) - 25 June<br />

1767 Charenton (France). On the suggestion of the Dantzig physician Johann<br />

Philip Breyn he came to Leiden in 1724, where he became Dr. jur. in 1730. In<br />

1735 he went to Gottingen, in 1736 to Halle, where he became Prof. jur. et<br />

phil. In 17 39 he had to flee because of large debts, and he went to Paris,<br />

where he lived as a translator. His wife and children returned to Holland in<br />

miserable circumstances.<br />

During his stay in Holland Sellius married the rich butcher's daughter Magdelena<br />

Verhoog and acquired a rich library and an elaborate collection of<br />

naturalia and instruments. These he also used for demonstrations at Halle.<br />

Sell ius was the author of a noteworthy book on Teredo attacks: "Historia Naturalis<br />

Teredinis .. • (Traj. ad Rhenum 17 33). <strong>Dutch</strong> translation "Natuurkundige<br />

historie van den zeehoutworm, ofte houtvreeter, zijnde koker- en meerschelpigh,<br />

inzonderheid van den nederlantschen", 1st part Utrecht 1733. The<br />

officer in the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies 1859-1882, where he was stationed at Larantoeka<br />

(Flores), 1862-1863, later at Besoeki, East Java. Physician at 's-Gravenhage.<br />

His collections of birds came to the Agricultural University at Wageningen<br />

during the period of Ritzema Bos (ca. 1900). It was a collection with many<br />

rarities, together with the collection C.J. van der Oudermeulen (q.v.) it<br />
