India Company. Lived at the Heerengracht, near the Leidschegracht at Amsterdam.
In his house he lodged a collection of stuffed birds and nearby he had an
aviary. He got many birds via Levaillant (Witkamp 1869, p. 183 seq.). He supplied

a collection of birds, that were killed by flying against the tower, blinded

Mining engineer. Director of the "Rijksopsporingsdiens van Delfstoffen"
since 1915; Director of the "Rijksgeologische Dienst" till 1946. During his
stratigraphic research he often used mollusc fauna's to solve problems on
geological chronology. He also studied tertiary molluscs of the Dutch East
Indies and pliocene molluscs from Timor. He possessed a collection of Coleoptera
(Cicindelidae, Carabidae, Haliplidae, Dytiscidae and Gyrinidae). The
collection (2,600 specimens, of which 440 Dutch species and varieties) was
sold for Dfl. 100.-- (Entom. Ber. III, 1910, p. 81). Everts 1922, p. XII;
