founded on a collection given by Burgomaster Hasselaer of Amsterdam (q.v.),<br />

who got it from Governor Mossel (q.v.) from the East Indies, and on thecabinet<br />

of its Director, J,C,S. van Lennep (q.v.) (1776, see Muntendam 1938,<br />

p. 470; Tuyn 1981, p. 175 seq.). The society's museum, established in 1759,<br />

was open to the public. (Ms. visitors books in the archives of the society).<br />

It was often visited when under the care of Van Marum (q.v.), who published<br />

a catalogue (Natuurkundige Verhandelingen van de Hollandsche Maatschappij<br />

der Wetenschappen II and III (1803, 1806, 1807). This catalogue was reprinted<br />

in Le Febure (1974, p. 299-376). The museum closed down in 1866. Under<br />

J,G,S. van Breda (1788-1867, q.v.) the greatest part of its possessions were<br />

transferred to the Museum of the <strong>Zoological</strong> Gardens Amsterdam, where a Ms.<br />

Catalogue is present: "Lijst der voorwerpen voor het museum uit de verzamelingen<br />

van de Hollandsche Maatschappij te Haarlem verkregen" (all sorts of<br />

Teylers Foundation, founded in 1778, started to collect fossils and minerals<br />

and physical instruments in 1782. In the course of the 19th century it<br />
