404, DRAAK, Reindert (Rijndert) Willebrordus - 14 Febr. 1786 Amsterdam -<br />

28 April 1866 Nigtevecht (Prov. Utrecht). Draak was an artisan, who had<br />

learned preparing and conserving animals from Temminck (q,v. ). When the<br />

latter left for the RMNH, Draak was appointed to the Amsterdam municipal<br />

orphanage as an attandant. In 1856 he departed for Nieuweramstel; 1858 for<br />

Weesperkarspel.<br />

Cabinet of fishes, birds, etc. On the garret of this institution he kept his<br />

collection, which in 1837 came in the "Stadsherberg" (Town Inn) at the Plantage,<br />

due to the mediation of G.F. Westermann (q.v.). The collection was<br />

then opened to the public 15 Oct. 1838; it was the first museum of the <strong>Zoological</strong><br />

Gardens, Amsterdam. Draak became the first director of this museum<br />

till 28 Febr. 1840. After a quarrel Draak seems to have withdrawn the collection;<br />

it was sold to Van Lidth de Jeude (q.v.). Gijzen records that Draak<br />

museum, owned by H. Bax, a professional preparator. Collection of stuffed<br />

birds and mammals, skulls, skeletons and <strong>Dutch</strong> sea shells. The birds are for<br />

Lawyer and Notary, Secretary of the "Kapittel" (Chapter) of Oud<br />

Munster. After 1813 member of several governmental commissions.<br />

Excellent collection of recent and fossil shells (ca. 176 nrs.) bought by<br />

King William I ca. May 1829 for the University of Luik. Some particular<br />

items were destined for Leiden. Drieling also possessed an important collection<br />
