1763 or 1764. Daughter of Joan van Hoorn ( q. v.). She<br />

married Lubbert Adolf Torck, 1688-1758, "Heer" (Lord) of Rosendael. No<br />

childern.<br />

Joan van Hoorn sent her shells and other sea products for the galleries of<br />

the Castle Rosendael, near Arnhem. Wijck 1970, p. 32-34; Stapel 1941, p. 38-<br />

732. HOOS, Johannes - 1706 Amsterdam - 28 Jan. 1763 Amsterdam. He lived on<br />

Rokin near the Langebrugsteeg at Amsterdam.<br />

A certain Jan Hoos was barkeeper in the Colveniers Doelen at Amsterdam in<br />

1706, where the broker J. Somer sold 13 April 1706 2 cabinets of shells.<br />

Perhaps this is his father? Also Amsterdamsche Courant 8 June 1706 and 22<br />

March 1712 (Sale 7 April). Collection of shells was sold at Amsterdam 19<br />

Dec. 1763 seq. (Lugt nr. 1336).<br />

733. HOPE, John 14 Febr. 1737 Amsterdam - 20 April 1784 's-Gravenhage,<br />

buried Amsterdam. "Heer" (Lord) of Nederhorst den Berg and 's-Gravenambacht.<br />

Director of the <strong>Dutch</strong> East India Company, merchant and banker. Lived at Amsterdam,<br />

Heerengracht near the Vijzelstraat.<br />

Hope left an enonnous amount of money, a library and a magnificent collection<br />

of plates and paintings. In 1772 he presented his shell collection to<br />

the Hollandsche Maatschappij at Haarlem, of which he was a Director. Jensen<br />
