150. BLAUW JAN= Jan Barentszn Westerhof - born Oldenburg (Germany); left
Amsterdam 1701 without drum or trumpet.
Under this name was known during the 18th century a menagerie in an inn "de
Hoop" at the Kloveniersburgwal, Amsterdam (now "Gebouw van de Werkende
Stand"). It had been founded before 1698 by Jan Barentsz Westerhof (q.v.)
and lasted till about 1784. Here, under different owners, all sorts of
living animals from foreign countries could be admired, together with misforrned
men and other curiosities, The library "Artis" contains a bound Ms.
by Jan Velten, of about 1700, with pictures of the animals shown here and
Westerhoft) or Jan Blauw or Blauw Jan (for details of his life c£. Van
Eeghen 1962, p. 153, and for later owners esp. Evert Metz). A later occupant
also "Atlas Zeden en Gewoonten", Kon. Oudheidk. Gen. in Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, porte£. XXVIII B nr. 255, where Bergmeijer advertises the arrival
of a young man without hands, also porte£. XXXIV, 2 March 1749 a young man
of about 70 em long, 24 years old). An old engraving of the menagerie by
Fritzsch in 1751 exists in two different editions (Witkamp 1875, p. 151-
156; Idem 1888; Loisel 1912; Kerbert 1906). In the Arch. Not. arch. 6528 nr.
