does not give further details,<br />

Since 1648 shopkeeper at Amsterdam; 1653 or 1654 "handelaar in garen en<br />

band" (drapery shopkeeper) at Delft. In 1660 "kamerbewaarder" (civil servant<br />

with an appointment as usher to the Alderman) of Delft; 1669 Surveyor to the<br />

Court of Holland, 1677 chief warden of Delft, 1679 "wijnroeier ende peilder"<br />

(inspector of weights and measures). His scientific life began about 1671.<br />

Leeuwenhoek \las no real collector, but he had a large collection of microscopes<br />

and microscopical preparations. His letters have been published in<br />

English (Philosophical Transactions, 1673-1724), in <strong>Dutch</strong> (1684-1718) and in
