Since 1648 shopkeeper at Amsterdam; 1653 or 1654 "handelaar in garen en
band" (drapery shopkeeper) at Delft. In 1660 "kamerbewaarder" (civil servant
with an appointment as usher to the Alderman) of Delft; 1669 Surveyor to the
Court of Holland, 1677 chief warden of Delft, 1679 "wijnroeier ende peilder"
(inspector of weights and measures). His scientific life began about 1671.
Leeuwenhoek \las no real collector, but he had a large collection of microscopes
and microscopical preparations. His letters have been published in
English (Philosophical Transactions, 1673-1724), in Dutch (1684-1718) and in
