Engraver, a.o. of the plates of M, Houttuyn's "Natuurlijke Historie", 1761-<br />

1773. Together with his brother George he induced Sepp to collect insects<br />

(Sepp 1762-1860, I(3), p. 21; I(4), p. 2).<br />

From Houttuyn's "Natuurlijke Historie" it becomes clear that J.C. Philips<br />

possessed a cabinet, with among other things, Coleoptera and spiders, cf.<br />

Houttuyn 1761-1773, IX, p. 147, 499; XIII, p. 266; and XIV, p. 13. Van der<br />

Couvet (Neuchatel). Lived at Rotterdam for a long time as secundary school<br />

teacher; amateur entomologist.<br />

Possessed a collection of microscopical preparates of parasitic insects,<br />

esp. those living on birds, which he presented to the <strong>Dutch</strong> Entom. Soc. in<br />

1865. He presented his entom. collection, herbarium and library to the city<br />

of Neuchatel in 1905. According to Horn (Supplementa Entomologica 1929, nr.<br />

17, p. 108) his collection of Mallophaga and Pediculidae is partly in the<br />

RMNH and partly in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.). Horn & Kahle 1935-'37,<br />

Lawyer, who joined the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indian Government in 1863 and retired<br />

in 1894, when he was Vice-President of the High Court of Justice. He<br />

wrote "Mimicry, Selection, Darwinismus" and together with P.C.T, Snellen<br />

(q.v,) "The Rhopalocera of Java".<br />

His collection of Indo-Australian Lepidoptera (esp. from Java) in Oct. 1917<br />
