Belgium. 1852-1855 he collected ca. 2,000 specimens on behalf of the "Commissie<br />
voor de geologische kaart en beschrijving van Nederland" and sent<br />
them to Teylers Museum at Haarlem where the Commission was housed. He also<br />
possessed a private collection. Some parts of Chelonia came in Teylers Museum<br />
at Haarlem. Collection is now in "Rijksmuseum Geologie en Mineralogie",<br />

Schoolmaster (1883-1890), later on headmaster (till 1901) at Amsterdam;<br />
teacher nat. hist. "Kweekschool" (Seminar for teachers) at Amsterdam<br />
(1901-1921) and "Kennemer Lyceum" at Bloemendaal (1921-1.930). He propagated<br />
the popularization of nature study and wrote many popular books on<br />
that subject, Together with E. Heimans (q.v.) and J. Jaspers (q.v.) he was<br />
one of the founders of the "Vereniging tot Behoud van Natuurmonumenten" (Society<br />
for the preservation of nature-monuments) in 1906.<br />
