The "Kleine Loo" and the "Groote Loo" were two country-houses on an estate
of the Prince of Orange, one kilometer east of 's-Gravenhage, near the "Huis
ten Bosch". Here "Mevrouw de Gouvernante", widow of Stadholder William IV,
founded a menagerie. A. Vosmaer (q.v.) had the supervision, cf. Pieters
The "Oude Loo" near Apeldoorn (Prov. Gelderland). This was one of the oldest
menageries of the Princes of Orange, begun as a "fasanderie", after Stadholder
William III had built a palace where formerly had been only a small
"jachtslot". Probably d'Hondecoeter made paintings of the menagerie of William
III. About the ups and downs see: G.A. Evers: De Menagerieen op het
Loo, in: Bijdr. en Mededel. Vereniging "Gelre", XV, p. 533-540; about the
falconry: Swaen 1937, p. 22, 26, 27, 100, 108, Like the "Kleine Loo" it
ended with the French invasion in 1795, when everything of value was brought
