on the "Beurssluis" at Amsterdam; draftsman and engraver, well-known by his<br />

"Rijngezichten", after drawings of Goll.<br />

His cabinet was sold at Amsterdam 30 Sept. 1766 (Lugt nr. 1560); catalogue<br />

918. LEVAILLANT (LE VAILLANT), Franr;ois - 1753 Paramaribo (Surinam) - 22<br />

Nov. 1824 La Noue (France). Son of the French Consul at Paramaribo; traveller<br />

and naturalist, educated in Holland, where he lived at Amsterdam during<br />

a long time.<br />

He made collecting trips through South-Africa 1781 and 1783. His watercolour<br />

drawings were famous. 165 Of them were bought by the parliament library<br />

at Cape-Town in 1963. They are also published, He brought a giraffe to<br />

the "Jardin des plantes" at Paris. Levaillant is the author of a.o. Voyages<br />

de F. Le Vaillant dans l'interieur de l'Afrique (Paris 1790); Histoire naturelle<br />

of the Utrecht Veterinary School 1821-1826; lectured at that school until<br />

1851.<br />

He assembled a large collection of natural history objects, which was of<br />

considerable renown. He offered his collection for sale for the first time<br />

in 1835, apparently to have it incorporated in the collections of the RMNH.<br />

In 1858 he again offered his collections for sale in a letter to Temminck<br />

and Schlegel. The first part of the collection contained 1,062 mammmals (362
