Physician at Middelburg. From 1853 till 1866 he taught anatomy at the<br />

Medical School at Middelburg, and functioned as Keeper of the collections of<br />

the "Zeeuwsch Genootschap" 1859-1909; in this function he succeeded J.C. van<br />

der Harst (q.v.). Father of Johannes Govertus (q.v.).<br />

His collection of butterflies was bequeathed to the "Artis" museum, Amsterdam<br />

(see Gids voor de bezoekers •.• Artis, 1864; Blasius 1880, p. 13). He<br />

also collected nests of birds and many fossils, Gedenkboek Zeeuwsch Genootschap<br />

978. MAN, Johannes Govertus de - 2 May 1850 Middelburg - 19 Jan. 1930 Yerseke.<br />

Son of Jan Cornelis de Man (q.v.). 1872-1875 Assistant and 1875-1883<br />

Keeper of the dept. of Evertebrates at the RMNH (Blasius 1880, p. 19, v.<br />

1879), later private scientist at Yerseke and 1909-1918 he succeeded his<br />

father as Keeper of the "Zeeuwsch Genootschap".<br />

De Man was especially interested in the higher Crustacea (Decapoda, Stomatopoda)<br />

and Nematoda. His collections came partly to the "Zeeuwsch Genootschap"<br />

(Gedenkboek Zeeuwsch Genootsch. 1919, p. 108), partly to the Zool.<br />

Mus. Amsterdam and partly to the RMNH. His library was bequeathed to the<br />

Society "Natura Artis Magistra" in 1930, J.C.H. de Meyere 1907, in: Tijdschr.<br />
