1121. OETS (OUTS), Pieter - 1726 Prov. Zeeland - 1790 Amsterdam. Painter<br />

esp. of portraits, in crayon. During several years he lived at Rotterdam, He<br />

also worked in England, and later was an art-dealer at Amsterdam.<br />

The collection of Oets, together with some other collections, was sold 31<br />

Jan. 1791 at Amsterdam. Among the objects in the catalogue were 266 nrs, of<br />

1124. OLIVIER, Gerrit van - 1759 Dordrecht - 6 Sept. 1827 "Postrust" near<br />

Hazerswoude ( Prov. Z. -Holland). Member of the Committee of the Navy and<br />

other advisory commissions in relation to seafaring.<br />

He possessed a collection of Coleoptera. Together with J.A. Bennet (q.v.) he<br />

composed 3 lists of animals, living in the Netherlands. These lists were published<br />

as prize-winning essays in the "Verhandelingen van de Hollandsche<br />

Maatschappij der Wetenschappen" at Haarlem (Fauna Belgica): 1) XI, 1822, p.<br />

77-440 (about mammals, birds and amphibians); 2) XIII, 182.5, p. 1-222 and<br />

XIV, 1825, p. 1-521 (about fishes and insects); 3) XV, 1826, p. 1-236 (about<br />

worms and molluscs). These articles were crowned with a gold medal by the<br />

"Hollandsche Maatschappij" in 1822, 1824, and 1826 resp. In 1802 Olivier and<br />

Bennet published their translation of J.F. Blumenbach's "Handbuch der Naturgeschichte"<br />
