1860 Arnhem. When 15 years old he entered the service of the <strong>Dutch</strong> navy and<br />

was pensioned off as "Schout bij nacht" (Rear Admiral).<br />

In 1815 he visited the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies for the second time for scientific<br />

exploration. In the Indies he collected insects esp. from Java and the Moluccas<br />

and made drawings of landscapes, plants and insects. On the way home<br />

he was commander of the "Admiraal Evertsen" that was shipwrecked near Mauritius,<br />

his collections and those of C,P,J. Elout (q.v.) and of C.G.C. Reinwardt<br />

(q.v.) were lost. (Cf. Kolon. Tijdschrift II, 1836, p. 243-247). He<br />

settled at Rotterdam as "Equipagemeester" (Master of the crew) and later as<br />

Director of the Navy till 1850, He contributed particularly drawings and<br />

descriptions of the metamorphosis of some 90 Lepidoptera to Sepp' s "Nederlandsche<br />

Verloren (q.v.).<br />

He possessed a collection of Lepidoptera, containing also specimens from the<br />

collections of C. Dalen (q.v.), J.C.H. van Walcheren (q.v.) and C. van Lennep<br />

(q,v.). In Sept. 1939 the collection (2,626 specimens, 1,089 species)<br />

from House "De Schothorst" at Hoogland, near Amersfoort, was presented to<br />

the "Ned. Heidemaatschappij" by the Director of the "Centraal Bureau voor<br />

het nemen van Veevoederproeven", J.C, Bessem. Horn & Kahle 1935-'37, p. SO:<br />
