menageries and cabinets of King Louis Napoleon (q.v.) (1808 Soestdi.jk, 1809<br />

Haarlem, then Amsterdam); 1810 Prof. chem., pharm. and nat. hist., Amsterdam.<br />

In 1815 he went to the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies as Director of agriculture.<br />

Though destined to succeed Brugmans, who died 1819, he stayed in the Indies<br />

till 1822, to finish his work. In 1823 Prof. chem., bot., geol. and mineralogy<br />

at Leiden University.<br />

In the Indies he collected much, but most of his collections were shipwrecked<br />

during their transport to Europe. Catalogue of his private collections,<br />

sold Leiden 5-6 Oct. 1854 (in Mus. Boerhaave). Auction of his books:<br />
