794. KATE, Herman Frederik Carel ten - 20 July 1858 Amsterdam - 4 Febr.<br />

1931 Carthage, Tunisia. Physician, anthropologist, ethnologist. Studied<br />

art and painting at 1 s-Gravenhage, then medicine at Leiden, Paris, Berlin<br />

and Heidelberg. Travelled extensively a.o. in N.-America, Surinam, Japan<br />

(where he worked as a physician for 15 years) and N.-Africa. In 1893 he became<br />

keeper of the Anthropological Dept. of the Museum in La Plata (Argentina).<br />

He presented much anthropological and ethnographical material to museums in<br />

Rotterdam, Leiden, Paris and Berlin. <strong>Zoological</strong> material from Surinam was<br />

donated to the RMNH. Holthuis 1959, in: Zool. Verhand, p. 26; 1978, p. 35;<br />

H, van Cappelle 1931, in: De Wandelaar, p. 110-114 (biogr., portr.). Nieuws<br />

the cabinet of J. ten Kate (Hagen 1863: Bibliotheca entornologica II, p.<br />

394). Possibly this is the same as <strong>Hendrik</strong> ten Kate (q.v,).<br />

living at Zierikzee. Druggist and dealer in photographic equipment and materials.<br />

His collection of shells is now in the possession of Swaneveld, founder of<br />

the Conchyliological Society in Cape Town. Presently he catalogues the collection<br />

of Viergever (q.v.).<br />
