794. KATE, Herman Frederik Carel ten - 20 July 1858 Amsterdam - 4 Febr.
1931 Carthage, Tunisia. Physician, anthropologist, ethnologist. Studied
art and painting at 1 s-Gravenhage, then medicine at Leiden, Paris, Berlin
and Heidelberg. Travelled extensively a.o. in N.-America, Surinam, Japan
(where he worked as a physician for 15 years) and N.-Africa. In 1893 he became
keeper of the Anthropological Dept. of the Museum in La Plata (Argentina).
He presented much anthropological and ethnographical material to museums in
Rotterdam, Leiden, Paris and Berlin. Zoological material from Surinam was

the cabinet of J. ten Kate (Hagen 1863: Bibliotheca entornologica II, p.
394). Possibly this is the same as Hendrik ten Kate (q.v,).

His collection of shells is now in the possession of Swaneveld, founder of
the Conchyliological Society in Cape Town. Presently he catalogues the collection
of Viergever (q.v.).

In this tavern in Amsterdam, Garampi saw in 1764 a collection of stuffed
