895, LEDEBOER, A. - Probably this is Dr. Adrianus Ledeboer (31 March 1797<br />

Rotterdam - 19 jan. 1887; physician at Deventer), bibliographer, bibliophile<br />

and curator of the Deventer grammar school.<br />

Possessed an anatomical cabinet.<br />

896. LEEFMANS, Salomon - 11 Jan. 1884 Leeuwarden - 3 Jan. 1954 Heemstede.<br />

Originally a businessman and amateur entomologist, In 1912 he came to Java,<br />

in the service of the "Handelsvereniging Amsterdam", and soon (1914) to the<br />

Inst, of Plant diseases at Buitenzorg (Bogar, Java); 1927-1934 Director of<br />

that Institute. He was very active in promoting the biological control of<br />

insect-pests. 1937 Lector of applied entomology, Univ. Amsterdam.<br />

Possessed a collection of Lamellicornia. In Entom, Ber. XV, 1954 are several<br />

articles on Leefmans as an entomologist (by J. de Wilde, p. 67-69 and by W,<br />

Roepke, p. 69-72), as a docent (by G. Barendrecht, p. 72-73) and during his<br />

Ameide and Herlaar; "Schepen" (Alderman) of Rotterdam, "Director van de Levantsche<br />

Handel" (Director of the Levant trade). Heir of the business and<br />

the estate of Arnout van den Bergh, lord of Ameide, Herlaar and Tienhoven,<br />

who died childless in 1733.<br />

Possessed a cabinet of shells, in which were parts of the cabinets of Seba<br />

(q.v.), Homoet (q.v.), Sluiter (q.v.), Westerveen (q.v.), Baart (q.v.) and<br />

others. Many shells from the East- and West Indies. The cabinet was sold 20<br />

May 1767 at Amsterdam, with thousands of specimens in 2,150 entries: "Catalogue<br />

systematique d 'un magnifique cabinet de tres belles coquilles etc."<br />

230 p., edited by Meuschen. In "Artis" is a Ms. with index of prices and<br />

buyers. Meuschen republished this catalogue in his "Miscellanea". Many<br />
