Vrolik (q,v.), cf, Dusseau 1865: Museum Vrolik (cf. Museum 1976, p. 19). The Amsterdam Zoological Gardens "Natura Artis Magistra", founded 1838, started showing a collection of stuffed animals. R, Draak (q.v.) had brought together on the garret of the Amsterdam Orphanage, Kalverstraat, opposite
9 the bookshop of G.F. Westerman, who together with Weisman and Weismuller took the initiative for an Amsterdam Zoo. The animals were exhibited in the New Town Inn (Nieuwe Stadsherberg) in the Plantage (Dethmar 1838-1841, III, p. 76), later (15 Oct, 1838) in the garden in the Plantage bought by the Society Natura Artis Magistra. Draak became its first director (up to 28 Febr. 1840, when -disagreeing with the managers -he left with his collection). Then G.F. Westerman (1807-1890, q.v.) became director. At once a new collection including living animals - derived from a travelling menagerie - was started; Scheffer 1939, p. 148 mentions a drawing of Klinkhamer (1839) showing the cages with the animals, which had been bought from VanAken (q.v.) and also from Martin (q.v,). The third director was C, Kerbert (1849-1927); director 1890-1927, cf. Scheffer 1939, p. 116, 129, 140; Weber 1927, in: Vakbl. Biol. IX, p. 26; the fourth director was A.L.J. Sunier (up to 1953), the fifth one E.F. Jacobi (up to 1973) and the present director is B.M. Lensink. From the beginning "Artis" showed different musea to the public: of stuffed mammals and birds in general, of skeletons, of insects, of Dutch animals and it started the new aquarium 1882, which partly belonged to the university (being greatly enriched by the travels of Weber, especially his Siboga expedition 1899-1900, see Publ. of Results, and: A. Weber-van Bosse: Een jaar aan boord van H.M. Siboga) and partly to the zoological gardens. As director of the Zoological Museum Max Weber was succeeded by L,F, de Beaufort (1922). In 1938 the museum collections came to the University of Amsterdam to alleviate the Garden's finances. After the Beaufort's retirement (1949) he was succeeded by H. Engel who was in function till 1968 and who was succeeded as professor by J,H, Stock and as director by C.A.W. Jeekel.
