first species of any kind to reach Holland from New Holland were two shells<br />

which had been given to Burgomaster Witsen of Amsterdam in 1698 by a seacaptain<br />

in the service of the <strong>Dutch</strong> East India Company, TI1is was William de<br />

Vlamingh, who had visited Western Australia in the previous year; and in a<br />

letter to Dr, <strong>List</strong>er of the Royal Society, Witsen says: "He found them on<br />

the seaside, and I make bold to send you the draught of them, the shells<br />

themselves being twice as long and as broad as the draught". He adds the<br />

courteous message: "I could not bestow them better than on one who hath the<br />

best knowledge of these and all other sea products", A description of the<br />

shells with illustrations was afterwards published in <strong>List</strong>er's "Synopsis<br />

Conchyliorum" one being the first Nautilus (N, •. ) the other then named the<br />

Holland and since 1745 Curator of Leiden University.<br />
