to Holland, became Stadholder of Cleve and from time to time he kept high<br />

military positions.<br />

He brought with him large collections, parts of which he bequeathed and exchanged<br />

since 1652. In 1652 he exchanged a part with the "Kurfiirst" for the<br />

mansion Freudenberg, near Cleve. In 1678-1679 his nephew Willem Maurits became<br />

universal heir. Parts of the collection are in Zool. Museum Berlin.<br />

Other parts, (esp. paintings) are in the "Mauritshuis" (built by him) at 1s­<br />

Gravenhage. Paintings and watercolour drawings, among them those made for<br />

Markgraf's "Historia rerum naturaliam Brasiliae", have been in the Preussische<br />

Staatsbibliothek, but are now, partly at least, in the Krakow Univ. Library.<br />

Natural Sciences) -Initiated by C.J. Temminck (q.v.) and J.H. van Swinderen<br />

(q.v.), and greatly stimulated by C.G.C. Reinwardt (q.v.) Instituted by<br />

Royal Decree of King William I in 1820.<br />

Its task included the collecting and shipment of objects in the field of natural<br />

history from the <strong>Dutch</strong> East Indies, destined for the RMNH. The Commission<br />

was discontinued 17 April 1850. Members of the commission were: H. Kuhl<br />

(appointed 1820, died in the Indies 1821); J.C. van Hasselt (app. 1820, died<br />

in the Indies 1823); J. Keultjes (app. 1820, died in the Indies 1821); G.<br />
