and Markgraf (q.v.), and the painters Post and Eeckhout. In 1644 he returned
to Holland, became Stadholder of Cleve and from time to time he kept high
military positions.
He brought with him large collections, parts of which he bequeathed and exchanged
since 1652. In 1652 he exchanged a part with the "Kurfiirst" for the
mansion Freudenberg, near Cleve. In 1678-1679 his nephew Willem Maurits became
universal heir. Parts of the collection are in Zool. Museum Berlin.
Other parts, (esp. paintings) are in the "Mauritshuis" (built by him) at 1s­
Gravenhage. Paintings and watercolour drawings, among them those made for
Markgraf's "Historia rerum naturaliam Brasiliae", have been in the Preussische
Staatsbibliothek, but are now, partly at least, in the Krakow Univ. Library.

1083. NATUURKUNDIGE COMMISSIE VAN NEDERLANDSCH INDIE (Commission for the
Natural Sciences) -Initiated by C.J. Temminck (q.v.) and J.H. van Swinderen
(q.v.), and greatly stimulated by C.G.C. Reinwardt (q.v.) Instituted by
Royal Decree of King William I in 1820.
Its task included the collecting and shipment of objects in the field of natural
history from the Dutch East Indies, destined for the RMNH. The Commission
was discontinued 17 April 1850. Members of the commission were: H. Kuhl
(appointed 1820, died in the Indies 1821); J.C. van Hasselt (app. 1820, died
in the Indies 1823); J. Keultjes (app. 1820, died in the Indies 1821); G.
van Raalten (app. 1820, died in the Indies 1829); H. Boie (q.v.) (app. 1824,
died in the Indies 1827); H. Macklot (app. 1824, died in the Indies 1832);
