Cornelis 's-Gravensande, painted by Cornelis de Man in 1681, and now in the
Old and New Hospital, Delft. In 1686 Johannes Verkolje made two portraits of
him, one is a painting (now in Mus. Boerhaave), showing Leeuwenhoek and his
diploma of fellowship of the Royal Society, the other is a mezzotint engraving
of Leeuwenhoek holding one of his microscopes, Another engraving was
made by Jan Goeree about 1707, showing Leeuwenhoek in his old age.
On the "Burcht" Jacobaeus (1910, p. 10) in 1650 saw all sorts of animals.
See also Ferrner 1910, p. 462, who mentions a menagerie in 1759. (Rookmaaker
Wild animals were shown on the fair (Loisel 1912, II, p. 50),
Living and stuffed animals were also kept during a certain time in the Botanical
Garden of the University (Hunger 1927, p. 218, picture of Woudanus
1610, and p. 247, 266, 268, 280, 282; 1942, p. 11). Brereton 1844, p. 42 (v.
The history of the zoological teaching has been written in 1926 by van der
Klaauw. It seems unnecessary to repeat here all the catalogues of the two
celebrated collections of natural history, the one in the Theatrum Anatomicum
and the one in the gallery of the Botanical Gardens. Vosmaer 1790 mentions
a catalogue (of sale?) of the Hortus collections, dated 1735. Cf. also
van der Klaauw 1926, p. 39, note 3, about the catalogues of the Theatrum
Anatomicum; and p. 3, note 7 on those of the cabinet of natural history. In
the UBA there are many editons. Pallas 1766b, p. 56; 1767-1777, VII, p. 27;
