1228. RAYE VAN BREUKELERWAARD, Joan - 1737 Paramaribo - 19 March 1823 Amsterdam,<br />

Son of Joan Raye, Governor of Surinam. Planter in Surinam, later on<br />

he lived at Utrecht and Amsterdam (Herengracht 29, between Utrechtsestraat<br />

and Reguliersplein). Unmarried,<br />

He possessed a cabinet of birds, insects, shells, corals and minerals. According<br />

to his friend Ternrninck (q.v.) in 1823 the value was Dfl. 52,000.--.<br />

The cabinet was sold 3 July 1827 seq. in Raye 1 s house in Amsterdam. lhe catalogue<br />

(in "Artis", with prices, also cat. in Entom. Soc.) is far more modern<br />

in nomenclature and arrangement than the 18th century catalogues used<br />

to be. A. "Buccinum scalare" was sold for Dfl, 330.--, and "Argonauta vitreus"<br />

for Dfl. 575.--. Many insects, Conchylia, other evertebrates and birds<br />

were bought by the RMNH. Raye 1 s library was auctioned 28 March 1825 at 1 s<br />
