1228. RAYE VAN BREUKELERWAARD, Joan - 1737 Paramaribo - 19 March 1823 Amsterdam,
Son of Joan Raye, Governor of Surinam. Planter in Surinam, later on
he lived at Utrecht and Amsterdam (Herengracht 29, between Utrechtsestraat
and Reguliersplein). Unmarried,
He possessed a cabinet of birds, insects, shells, corals and minerals. According
to his friend Ternrninck (q.v.) in 1823 the value was Dfl. 52,000.--.
The cabinet was sold 3 July 1827 seq. in Raye 1 s house in Amsterdam. lhe catalogue
(in "Artis", with prices, also cat. in Entom. Soc.) is far more modern
in nomenclature and arrangement than the 18th century catalogues used
to be. A. "Buccinum scalare" was sold for Dfl, 330.--, and "Argonauta vitreus"
for Dfl. 575.--. Many insects, Conchylia, other evertebrates and birds
were bought by the RMNH. Raye 1 s library was auctioned 28 March 1825 at 1 s
