Draughtsman and copper-engraver, architect, esp. of gardens. As a huguenot<br />
he lived at 's-Gravenhage after the edict of Nantes in 1685, He worked a.o.<br />
for William III, whom he followed to England. Probably he worked a.o. at the<br />
renovation of the castle "Rozendaal" near Arnhem, esp. at the gardens.<br />

994. MARTIN, P. Henri - 10 Jan. 1793 Marseille (France) - 1876 or later,<br />
Overschie, near Rotterdam. In 1820 he was married to Cornelia Wilhelmina van<br />
Aken (q.v.); from 1857 till 1866 he was Director of the Rotterdam Zoo.<br />
He possessed a menagerie of living animals, such as lions, a tiger, Boa constrictor,<br />
crocodil, ibis, ostrich, to show them and to use them at performances<br />
in a circus, cf. Beschrijving der dieren welke zich bevinden in de<br />
menagerie van M, Martin & Comp., Amsterdam 1836 ("Artis" nr. 132). He sold<br />
his animals to van Aken (q.v.) who in his turn sold them to the Zool, Gardens<br />
Amsterdam in 1838 (see Jaarboekje Natura Artis Magistra 1852, p. 114).<br />
