990. MAROT, Daniel the Elder - ca. 1663 Paris - 4 June 1753 's-Gravenhage.
Draughtsman and copper-engraver, architect, esp. of gardens. As a huguenot
he lived at 's-Gravenhage after the edict of Nantes in 1685, He worked a.o.
for William III, whom he followed to England. Probably he worked a.o. at the
renovation of the castle "Rozendaal" near Arnhem, esp. at the gardens.

Painter, draughtsman, copper-engraver. After the death of his
father he especially painted gardens, grottos, etc.
A collection of drawings and copper-etchings was auctioned at Amsterdam,
March 1754. In the auction Pick 1897 at Amsterdam, there were 13 of his

994. MARTIN, P. Henri - 10 Jan. 1793 Marseille (France) - 1876 or later,
Overschie, near Rotterdam. In 1820 he was married to Cornelia Wilhelmina van
Aken (q.v.); from 1857 till 1866 he was Director of the Rotterdam Zoo.
He possessed a menagerie of living animals, such as lions, a tiger, Boa constrictor,
crocodil, ibis, ostrich, to show them and to use them at performances
in a circus, cf. Beschrijving der dieren welke zich bevinden in de
menagerie van M, Martin & Comp., Amsterdam 1836 ("Artis" nr. 132). He sold
his animals to van Aken (q.v.) who in his turn sold them to the Zool, Gardens
Amsterdam in 1838 (see Jaarboekje Natura Artis Magistra 1852, p. 114).
