Abstract
The main purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the practice of translation in film
festivals in order to have a better understanding of this area of translation. At film festivals,
all films shown in the original version have to be rendered accessible to the audience and so
translation has a fundamental role.
This study analyses the field of multimedial translation in detail in order to examine
its specific features and problems in an area that is of particular interest for the multimedial
translator.
The research starts by examining the most common methods of multimedial
translation, the different features of these methods and the way they affect the perception of
the audience in the particular genre of material shown at film festivals, i.e. art films and
works of cultural value, is also discussed.
Next, a series of interviews carried out with the directors and organisers of several
film festivals are presented together with the criteria adopted to select the film festivals in
order to have a representative and heterogeneous group. The purpose of this chapter is to
understand how the specific conditions and characteristics of the film festival influence
translation, from the point of view of both the director and the translator (interpreter or
subtitler).
The study, which involved a corpus of eight interviews, was conceived as part of the
‘case studies’ group on this field. It success lies not in the fact that provides results that are
statistically valid, but in the fact that it demonstrates how, even analysing just a small
number of cases, significant differences can be found and interesting considerations made.
The study ends with the analysis of one specific film festival in detail: Bologna: the
Human Rights Nights film festival. Based on our personal experience as translators for this
film festival, this study examines the work of the subtitler and the characteristics of the film
festival as a work place, namely the issues that inspired this dissertation.
The analysis results in certain general considerations.
