ABSTRACT
In this thesis we seek to investigate the articulations between poetry and
music in Brazilian art songs, to think about their Brazilianness and about their
interpretive possibilities. The chosen corpus consists of seven representative songs
by Lorenzo Fernandez, who is regarded as a nationalist composer. In this work we
tried to demonstrate that an art song can create images, and that Lorenzo Fernandez’s
songs construct certain ideas of Brazilianness through the images they create. In
order to achieve that, using a transdisciplinary approach, we constituted the image
with multiple sensory characteristics as a transversal concept capable of bringing
together the different languages of the song. The theoretical references on translation
helped us in the adoption of interpretive attitudes that privileged creativity and
method. In order to build sense in the poetic and musical texts we used the
translation theories in counterpoint with the semiology of music and the tripartite
theory of Jean Molino and JJ Nattiez. In order to build a strategy for the perception
of images we set off from the concepts of the mosaic and the network. Making use of
the various signic levels described by Peirce, we examine from which elements of
the poetic and musical text it is possible to perceive the visuality, plasticity,
movement, spatiality, temporality and, finally, the various feelings responsible for
the creation of images related to our various senses. Finally, we tried to demonstrate,
in the songs of Lorenzo Fernandez, in dialogue with the contexts of the author and
performer, the images of Brazilianness which, in songs and from them, are formed.
