3.4 Summary and Conclusion<br />

The findings of the needs analysis <strong>und</strong>erline that the teaching of English at vocational schools<br />

must take into consideration that students who work as joiners are only confronted to a very<br />

li<strong>mit</strong>ed extent with the need to use English in their profession. Thus, the teaching of ‘English for<br />

Joiners’ with its reduced need on the job offers the ideal backgro<strong>und</strong> for VOLL, the learning of<br />

English for life and personal development. The presented syllabus document and the revised<br />

textbook concept are based on this needs analysis of the target group and aim to provide students<br />

with tailor-made, interesting and motivating English lessons.<br />

APPENDIX 1:<br />

Syllabus for the subject ‘Career-Related Foreign Language’ for joiners<br />

EDUCATIONAL AND TEACHING OBJECTIVES<br />

■ Students should be able to cope with situations arising in their occupational and private life<br />

in a foreign language.<br />

■ They should be able to <strong>und</strong>erstand listening and reading texts – with the help of a bilingual<br />

dictionary. They should be able to communicate appropriately orally and in writing as well<br />

as develop and apply their gained knowledge and skills self-reliantly.<br />

■ They should be conscious of the importance of the knowledge of a foreign language for the<br />

development of their personal and occupational ability to communicate and to act.<br />

■ Students preparing for the Berufsreifeprüfung should have additional competences in<br />

creative writing and take correct spelling into account.<br />

First year<br />

Students should be able to<br />

■ <strong>und</strong>erstand most of the classroom conversation and most easy topic-related listening texts<br />

as well as some details.<br />

■ <strong>und</strong>erstand most easy topic-related reading texts and find out details with the help of<br />

dictionaries and other means for interpreting.<br />

■ express themselves using easy words, phrases and simple questions.<br />

■ note down terms and phrases, fill in forms and re-arrange easy texts.<br />

For students preparing for the Berufsreifeprüfung exam<br />

■ oral language use and note-taking<br />

■ dealing with topics that are relevant for social and professional life (source studies,<br />

concepts and working out of simple texts)<br />
