3.4 Summary and Conclusion
The findings of the needs analysis underline that the teaching of English at vocational schools
must take into consideration that students who work as joiners are only confronted to a very
limited extent with the need to use English in their profession. Thus, the teaching of ‘English for
Joiners’ with its reduced need on the job offers the ideal background for VOLL, the learning of
English for life and personal development. The presented syllabus document and the revised
textbook concept are based on this needs analysis of the target group and aim to provide students
with tailor-made, interesting and motivating English lessons.
APPENDIX 1:
Syllabus for the subject ‘Career-Related Foreign Language’ for joiners
EDUCATIONAL AND TEACHING OBJECTIVES
■ Students should be able to cope with situations arising in their occupational and private life
in a foreign language.
■ They should be able to understand listening and reading texts – with the help of a bilingual
dictionary. They should be able to communicate appropriately orally and in writing as well
as develop and apply their gained knowledge and skills self-reliantly.
■ They should be conscious of the importance of the knowledge of a foreign language for the
development of their personal and occupational ability to communicate and to act.
■ Students preparing for the Berufsreifeprüfung should have additional competences in
creative writing and take correct spelling into account.
First year
Students should be able to
■ understand most of the classroom conversation and most easy topic-related listening texts
as well as some details.
■ understand most easy topic-related reading texts and find out details with the help of
dictionaries and other means for interpreting.
■ express themselves using easy words, phrases and simple questions.
■ note down terms and phrases, fill in forms and re-arrange easy texts.
For students preparing for the Berufsreifeprüfung exam
■ oral language use and note-taking
■ dealing with topics that are relevant for social and professional life (source studies,
concepts and working out of simple texts)
