1. Introduction and Overview • The newly developed normal equation stacker offers sophisticated options for preelimination of parameters and for the geodetic datum definition including minimum constraint network conditions. • The parameter estimation programs may be used for baseline-, session-, campaign-, multiple campaign processing. Many different complex solutions (e.g., annual coordinate and ERP solutions) using (e.g., daily) normal equation systems can be produced without reprocessing of observations. • International input/output formats are supported: RINEX with LEO extension, SP3c, SINEX, IONEX, Clock RINEX, Troposphere SINEX, ANTEX, IERS ERP. • A sophisticated observation simulation tool is available. • The menu reflects the program structure to guide the user through the processing steps. • A graphical user interface with clear input panels supports the user by managing the numerous program options. An extended html-based on-line help is available for all options. • The newly developed powerful Bernese Processing Engine (BPE) allows to tailor automated processing sequences. Sophisticated examples contained in the distribution: precise point positioning, baseline processing, network processing (RINEX-to-SINEX), clock parameter estimation. Technically the Bernese GPS Software Version 5.0 may be characterized as follows: • platform independence: supported are both UNIX/Linux and MS-Windows Operating Systems, • perl supported as cross-platform scripting language, • use of Fortran 90 (structures, dynamic memory allocation), • platform independent user interface written in C++ using the Qt library from Trolltech, • revised and simplified directory structure in program-, user- and data area, • new installation script on UNIX/Linux, setup wizard on Windows, and • a new update-toolkit helps the users to keep the software up-to-date in the case of detected bugs and improvements. 1.3 Program Structure The Bernese GPS Software consists of more than 300 000 lines of source code in about 1 200 modules. The menu program acts as user interface for most of the nearly 100 programs. These programs are activated through pull-down menus that reflect the main parts of the software in a logical way as illustrated in Figure 1.1: Transfer Part – ”Menu>RINEX”: Programs for generating files in the Bernese format from RINEX and vice versa. Furthermore, this part also contains a set of tools to cut/concatenate and to manipulate RINEX files. Page 6 AIUB

Conversion Part – ”Menu>Conversion”: Programs to extract external information necessary for the processing (e.g., coordinates and velocities from ITRF in SINEX format, ANTEX). Orbit Part – ”Menu>Orbits/EOP”: Programs for generation of a source-independent orbit representation (standard orbits), to update orbits, generate orbits in precise orbit format, compare orbits, etc. The Earth orientation related tools are included in this part too. Processing Part – ”Menu>Processing”: Programs for code processing (single station), single/dual frequency code and phase pre-processing, parameter estimation based on GPS and/or GLONASS observations (program GPSEST) and on the superposition of normal equation systems (program ADDNEQ2). Simulation Part – ”Menu>Service>Generate simulated observation data”: Program to generate simulated GPS and GLONASS observations (code and/or phase, L1 or L1/L2) based on statistical information (RMS for observations, biases, cycle slips). Service Part – ”Menu>Service”: A collection of useful tools to edit/browse/manipulate binary data files, compare coordinate sets, display residuals, etc. A set of programs to convert binary files to ASCII and vice versa (located in ”Menu>Conversion”) belong to the service part, too.
