22. Data Structure
22.1 Introduction
This chapter gives an introduction into the data structure of the Bernese GPS Software,
Version 5.0 . This includes a detailed description of the data files and formats used in the
software. We start with general input files used by most of the programs and conclude with
a variety of output files.
22.2 Overview of the Directory Structure
There are four major categories of files:
(1) general files,
(2) campaign-specific files,
(3) user-specific files, and
(4) temporary files.
The directory trees for the first three categories are illustrated in Figure 22.1. The directory
variables are given for UNIX systems (first entry) and Windows systems (second entry).
The data area abbreviations have to be defined on all systems (e.g., in the LOADGPS.setvar
script for UNIX or in the registry for Windows) and are in principle arbitrary. All “program
area” subdirectories are shown in Figure 21.1.
General files and master copies of program input files are stored in the program area.
They are campaign- and user-independent. We have a closer look at these general files in
Section 22.4. An overview of the other directories of this category (USERSCPT, etc.) was
given in the previous chapter (see Section 21.2). There is a close connection between the
files in some of the directories in the program area, in the user-specific directories and
the temporary directories: The directories OPT, PAN, PCF, and USERSCPT contain master
copies of input and script files. The content of these directories is copied to the user-specific
directories OPT, PAN, PCF, and SCRIPT when creating the user area. With the exception
of the directory GEN most of the data files belonging to the program area are of technical
nature (e.g., theINP-files, see Chapter 18). We therefore do not put much emphasis on these
files, here.
All campaign-specific files are stored in the campaign directories ATM, BPE, OBS, ORB,
ORX, OUT, RAW, SOL, and STA. A detailed overview of the content of important files in
