Currently forest owners <strong>and</strong> forest product manufacturers <strong>in</strong> Latvia can choose to<br />

receive forest management or supply cha<strong>in</strong> certification either through FSC or PEFC<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards. The State <strong>Forest</strong>s <strong>and</strong> several larger forestry companies use FSC, while<br />

many smaller forest owners use PEFC.<br />

FSC<br />

The overall goal of the Latvian FSC st<strong>and</strong>ard is “to implement <strong>in</strong> forest management<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally recognized environment-friendly, economically viable, <strong>and</strong> socially<br />

beneficial methods, adapted to the Latvian conditions <strong>and</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g for the conservation<br />

<strong>and</strong> further enhancement of the forest’s multiple values” (LFCC 2003). The<br />

Latvian FSC st<strong>and</strong>ard is based on the <strong>in</strong>ternational FSC Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>and</strong> Criteria. A<br />

comparison of the economic, environmental <strong>and</strong> social requirements of the FSC <strong>and</strong><br />

PEFC st<strong>and</strong>ards is presented below <strong>in</strong> Table 6.<br />

The stated goal for the Latvian PEFC st<strong>and</strong>ards is “to develop susta<strong>in</strong>able forestry<br />

with a balance among production, environment <strong>and</strong> cultural environment<br />
