Dietmar Stoian heads the Center for Competitiveness of Ecoenterprises (CeCoEco)<br />

at CATIE, Turrialba, Costa Rica. He earned his Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Economics from<br />

Freiburg University. In 1993 he analyzed the potential of export<strong>in</strong>g certified wood<br />

furniture from Brazil <strong>in</strong>to Europe. In the late 1990s he formed part of the group that<br />

elaborated the Bolivian st<strong>and</strong>ards for Brazil nut certification. In 2001 he published the<br />

article “<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> at the Crossroads: Between Panacea <strong>and</strong> Impasse” (<strong>in</strong><br />

Spanish). CeCoEco runs various projects that seek to foster the trade <strong>in</strong> certified<br />

wood products, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the bil<strong>in</strong>gual website EcoNegocios <strong>Forest</strong>ales – <strong>Forest</strong><br />

EcoBus<strong>in</strong>ess (www.catie.ac.cr/econegociosforestales).<br />

Maria Tysiachniouk holds a Master of Science <strong>in</strong> Environmental Studies from Bard<br />

College, NY, a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Biology from the Russian Academy of Sciences <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Certificate <strong>in</strong> Nonprofit Studies from Johns Hopk<strong>in</strong>s University. She has taught at<br />

Herzen Pedagogical University <strong>in</strong> St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg State University, Johns<br />

Hopk<strong>in</strong>s University, Dick<strong>in</strong>son College, PA, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Towson<br />

University, <strong>and</strong> short courses at several universities <strong>in</strong> Europe. Dr. Tysiachniouk has<br />

written more than eighty publications on topics related to the third sector <strong>and</strong> has<br />

had fieldwork experience <strong>in</strong> Kamchatka <strong>and</strong> the Far East. She is currently chair<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Environmental Sociology group at the Center for Independent Social Research, St.<br />

Petersburg, Russia <strong>and</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g field research on global forest governance as well as<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the role of non-profit organizations <strong>in</strong> social transformation. Dr.<br />

Tysiachniouk studied the role of transboundary environmental organizations <strong>in</strong><br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g forest certification <strong>in</strong> Russia, Brazil <strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. She recently published a<br />

book, Ecological Modernization of the <strong>Forest</strong> Sector <strong>in</strong> Russia <strong>and</strong> the United States, <strong>in</strong><br />

which certification is a key component.<br />

Morgan Wairiu is currently Deputy Director of Environmental Concerns Action<br />

Network of Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s (ECANSI), a local NGO, which promotes eco-forestry<br />

<strong>and</strong> community forest management <strong>in</strong> collaboration with Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

Development Trusts (SIDT) eco-forestry <strong>and</strong> forest certification program. He has<br />

served as Secretary to the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Livestock (Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s) <strong>and</strong><br />

Manager of Secretariat of the Marau Communities Association (MCA) <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able livelihood projects. He completed his Ph.D. from Ohio State<br />

University, Columbus, Ohio, USA <strong>in</strong> 2001, hav<strong>in</strong>g studied erosion <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> use effects<br />

under subsistence agriculture on slop<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Solomon Isl<strong>and</strong>s. He served as head<br />

of Kolombangara <strong>Forest</strong> Products Limited’s (KFPL) Technical Services Department<br />

<strong>and</strong> directed its forest silvilcultural operations <strong>and</strong> Environmental Monitor<strong>in</strong>g. He<br />

collaborated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>itial process towards FSC certification of KFPL plantation <strong>in</strong> 1998.<br />

For his Master of Science research, he worked with the Scottish <strong>Forest</strong> Commission.<br />
