both from Cornell University. Founder <strong>and</strong> President of the Advisory Council of the<br />

Brazilian Society for Ecological Economics (ECOECO), he is presently Chairman of<br />

the Development, Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Society at the Federal Rural University of Rio de<br />

Janeiro, Brazil, as well as Executive Secretary of the Brazilian Agroforestry Network-<br />

REBRAF. Dr. May has conducted extensive research on the movement toward certified<br />

forest management <strong>in</strong> Brazil, hav<strong>in</strong>g most recently co-authored the studies “Barriers<br />

to Certified <strong>Forest</strong> Management <strong>in</strong> the Amazon: The Importance of Cost” (IIED/GTZ<br />

2001) <strong>and</strong> “<strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> <strong>in</strong> Brazil” (Consumer Choice Council 2002).<br />

Bill Maynard has been a practitioner <strong>in</strong> the area of forest certification <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

development <strong>in</strong> forestry <strong>and</strong> the timber <strong>in</strong>dustry for 15 years. He worked first for a<br />

timber importer <strong>in</strong> the UK before ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an M.Sc. <strong>in</strong> Resource Management from<br />

the University of Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh <strong>and</strong> then spend<strong>in</strong>g most of his professional life <strong>in</strong> Asia.<br />

He has participated as a team member <strong>and</strong> team leader <strong>in</strong> forest certifications <strong>in</strong><br />

natural forests, community operations <strong>and</strong> plantations <strong>in</strong> many countries <strong>in</strong> the<br />

region <strong>and</strong> has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a number of pre-assessments <strong>and</strong> surveillance for<br />

FSC. He has also been active <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g national st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>in</strong> countries <strong>in</strong> both<br />

Asia <strong>and</strong> Africa. After work<strong>in</strong>g extensively with WWF to set up the Global <strong>Forest</strong> &<br />

Trade Network <strong>in</strong> Asia, he has set up Global <strong>Forest</strong>ry Services, a company explicitly<br />

designed to help all members of the timber trade cha<strong>in</strong> reach the st<strong>and</strong>ards of<br />

certification.<br />

Constance McDermott is a Postdoctoral Associate <strong>and</strong> Program Director for the Yale<br />

Program on <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong>. She has conducted research <strong>and</strong> applied work <strong>in</strong><br />

social forestry, forest certification <strong>and</strong> environmental <strong>and</strong> social policy <strong>in</strong> North <strong>and</strong><br />

Central America, South Asia, <strong>and</strong> globally. She completed a B.A. <strong>in</strong> Anthropology at<br />

Amherst College, an M.S. <strong>in</strong> Social <strong>Forest</strong>ry at the University of Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

doctorate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry at the University of British Columbia.<br />

Errol Meid<strong>in</strong>ger is Professor of Law <strong>and</strong> Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the State<br />

University of New York <strong>in</strong> Buffalo, where he also serves as Vice Dean of Law for<br />

Research <strong>and</strong> Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary Initiatives. He is also Honorary Professor of <strong>Forest</strong>ry<br />

<strong>and</strong> Environmental Science at the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he<br />

regularly offers short courses <strong>and</strong> directs Ph.D. students. Most of his research focuses<br />

on <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>in</strong>stitutional arrangements for promot<strong>in</strong>g environmental conservation<br />

<strong>and</strong> social justice. These <strong>in</strong>clude non-governmental regulatory structures such as<br />

forest certification <strong>and</strong> fair labor st<strong>and</strong>ards programs, mechanisms for promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ecosystem management, citizen suits for enforc<strong>in</strong>g environmental laws, new ways of<br />

ascerta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> recogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>digenous resource rights, <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong>ed engagement<br />

by scientists <strong>in</strong> policy mak<strong>in</strong>g. He earned his J.D. <strong>in</strong> Law <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Sociology at<br />

Northwestern University.<br />

Julio Morales Canc<strong>in</strong>o is currently enrolled <strong>in</strong> CATIE’s Master Program on <strong>Forest</strong><br />

Management <strong>and</strong> Biodiversity Conservation. His master’s thesis focuses on the<br />

certification process, the cha<strong>in</strong> of custody, <strong>and</strong> certification costs for natural forests <strong>in</strong><br />

yale school of forestry & environmental studies
