Ten Russian forest companies provide 25 percent of all harvesting and processing in Russia. 28 In 2003, 40 percent of Russia’s wood exports went to the European Union, 24 percent to China, and 15 percent to Japan (see Figure 3). 29 In 1999, at least 500,000 cubic meters of forest products were exported to Estonia and around 100,000 cubic meters to Latvia. 30 Russian forest products exported to western Europe in 2002 were: Finland 72 percent, Germany 10 percent, UK 4 percent, Sweden 3 percent, Italy 2 percent, other countries less (see Figures 4 and 5). 31 28 WWF program office report, Moscow 2003. 29 WWF database 2003. 30 WWF databases, 2002. 31 State Customs Committee of Russia 2002.
