Durango is the state with the most certified forest area, at 276,741 hectares <strong>and</strong> 21<br />

forestry operations. Next is Chihuahua with 209,495 hectares <strong>and</strong> Oaxaca with 79,960<br />

hectares. With the exception of Qu<strong>in</strong>tana Roo, which is made up of ra<strong>in</strong>forests, all of<br />

the country’s certified forests are temperate coniferous or oak-dom<strong>in</strong>ated forests.<br />

A large <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> number of evaluated <strong>and</strong> certified operations occurred between<br />

1998 <strong>and</strong> 2002. This <strong>in</strong>crease co<strong>in</strong>cides with the dem<strong>and</strong> for certification by the forest<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Durango <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>troduction of government assistance <strong>and</strong> subsidies for<br />

certification, first through PROCYMAF <strong>and</strong> subsequently through PRODEFOR (see<br />

Figure 2).<br />
