of the forestry operation that is conflict-free, this could encourage the owners of<br />

forestl<strong>and</strong> under private or social property tenure to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> their certification <strong>and</strong><br />

try to resolve their <strong>in</strong>ternal conflicts.<br />

Future Research<br />

Regard<strong>in</strong>g future research on certification <strong>in</strong> Mexico, among the most important<br />

topics will be further evaluation of the environmental, social <strong>and</strong> economic impacts<br />

of forestry certification over the last ten years. This research should aim to discover<br />

whether social conditions among the people of certified communities <strong>and</strong> ejidos have<br />

improved, whether forest management has come to <strong>in</strong>corporate better safeguards for<br />

preservation <strong>and</strong> conservation of the biodiversity of certified forests, <strong>and</strong> whether,<br />

through strengthen<strong>in</strong>g forestry adm<strong>in</strong>istration, greater efficiency <strong>and</strong> improved<br />

market prices have been achieved among community forestry enterprises. Research<br />

should be encouraged <strong>in</strong>to market <strong>and</strong> commercialization opportunities so that<br />

Mexican forestry firms can improve their prospects for enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

markets <strong>in</strong> North America <strong>and</strong> Europe.<br />

In this sense, the feasibility of creat<strong>in</strong>g or develop<strong>in</strong>g new certification processes<br />

that highlight the value of community forestry operations should be explored. Such<br />

new certification processes would seek to differentiate their products <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

market, with fair market prices.<br />
