Author Biographies<br />

Ansis Actiņš received his Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> forestry from the Latvia University of<br />

Agriculture, <strong>Forest</strong> Faculty, concentrat<strong>in</strong>g on forest management certification <strong>in</strong><br />

Latvian state forests. He also earned a Master’s degree from the same university. From<br />

2001-2002 he served as a FSC <strong>Forest</strong> Management group certification manager<br />

deputy <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> 2000 Ltd. S<strong>in</strong>ce 2002, Mr. Actiņš has worked <strong>in</strong> a state stock<br />

company, Latvijas valsts meži (Latvia state forests), as a reforestation <strong>and</strong> certification<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ator. In 2003 he passed the exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>and</strong> assessment for ISO 9000:2000<br />

Series Auditor/Lead Auditor. His hobbies <strong>in</strong>clude orienteer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> travel<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Ferd<strong>in</strong><strong>and</strong>us Agung Prasetyo is a researcher at the Center for International <strong>Forest</strong>ry<br />

Research (CIFOR) Bogor, Indonesia. He is currently work<strong>in</strong>g on a research project<br />

related to forest trade, illegal logg<strong>in</strong>g, conservation <strong>and</strong> certification <strong>in</strong> Indonesia. In<br />

2004, he published the book Learn<strong>in</strong>g Lessons to Promote <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Control Illegal Logg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Indonesia.<br />

Re<strong>in</strong> Ahas is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Geography, University of Tartu,<br />

Estonia. He has coord<strong>in</strong>ated several forestry projects <strong>and</strong> has been a board member of<br />

the Estonian Green Movement-Friends of the Earth. He has worked with the FSC <strong>and</strong><br />

its Estonian <strong>in</strong>itiative s<strong>in</strong>ce 1996. Dr. Ahas’ ma<strong>in</strong> scientific <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude: impact of<br />

climate change, natural resource use policy, environmental management, susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

forestry, mobile position<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> environmental plann<strong>in</strong>g. The topic of his Ph.D. work<br />

(completed <strong>in</strong> 1999) studied climate change impacts on the phenology of trees. In<br />

2001, he was a Visit<strong>in</strong>g Scholar at Oxford University <strong>and</strong> a Fulbright Scholar at<br />

University of Wiscons<strong>in</strong>, Milwaukee. He has published 25 scientific works <strong>in</strong> the<br />

above-mentioned fields of <strong>in</strong>terests. Dr. Ahas currently lectures <strong>and</strong> supervises<br />

students <strong>in</strong> human geography, EIA, environmental management, <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Salvador Anta Fonseca is currently an <strong>in</strong>dependent consultant <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a number forestry-related projects <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the adoption of forestry<br />

certification by communities <strong>in</strong> Mexico. He has also participated <strong>in</strong> World Bank<br />

forestry studies, forestry programs of the Mexican government, <strong>and</strong> organization <strong>and</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g projects for certified <strong>and</strong> non-certified communities. Mr. Anta founded <strong>and</strong><br />

is a current member of the Advisory Council for the Mexican Civil Council for<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able Silviculture <strong>and</strong> has recently been named Executive Director of the Civil<br />

Council for Susta<strong>in</strong>able Coffee Production <strong>in</strong> Mexico. From 1995 to 2002, Mr. Anta<br />
